The ILIAS learning management system supports the design and organisation of teaching at Leibniz University Hannover through numerous functions. In particular, ILIAS can be used to promote independent learning among students.

The ILIAS functions include, among others:

  • Online learning modules in which texts, images, videos and tests can be linked to form a coherent learning unit
  • Tests that can be used as coursework or for e-exams
  • Exercise tool to support the implementation and organisation of learning tasks
  • Blogs, portfolios, flashcard training, video annotations
  • Standard communication tools such as wikis and forums
  • Currently being tested in LUH-ILIAS: a selection of H5P content elements that can be used to integrate interactive (learning) content.

ILIAS merger 2026

From March 2026, we are planning extensive changes to the ILIAS systems at LUH. LUH-ILIAS and Stud.IP-ILIAS will be merged. The aim is to combine the advantages of both systems in LUH-ILIAS. Once the changes have been completed, only LUH-ILIAS will be used, which will then be directly connected to Stud.IP. It will still be possible to use the system independently of Stud.IP.

ILIAS migration registration now open

You can now register transfers of teaching/learning content from Stud.IP-ILIAS to LUH-ILIAS. Please use the instructions linked on this ILIAS page (WebSSO login required).

If you have any questions, please contact E-Learning Support at elearning@uni-hannover.de or by telephone on 762-4040.

Important preliminary information

  • System failure: LUH ILIAS and Stud.IP ILIAS will be unavailable for approximately two days in March 2026 due to the changeover.

  • New system: From March 2026, new teaching and learning content can only be created, managed and used in LUH ILIAS.

  • Stud.IP-ILIAS shutdown: Stud.IP-ILIAS, which was previously connected to Stud.IP, will no longer be available for creating new content from March 2026.
    • During a limited transition period, LUH employees will still be able to access existing content on Stud.IP-ILIAS.
    • After the transition period, it will be completely shut down in 2027.
    • If you provide teaching materials via Stud.IP-ILIAS, these should be transferred to LUH-ILIAS as part of the changeover.

  • No changes to E-Prüfung-ILIAS: This system is not affected.

Further information on the exact date, changes, the planned parallel operation and the transfer of your content will follow by the end of November. If you have any questions, please contact E-Learning Support.

Designing digital teaching with ILIAS

ILIAS functions can be made available to students via the interface in Stud.IP, or you can use the full range of functions directly in Luh-ILIAS (please also note the login instructions):

  • Presentation of learning material, practice, repetition, consolidation
    • Learning modules allow students to access learning content in the form of text, images, videos or animations, similar to a script. Self-study tests and other types of tasks can be integrated. They can be easily combined with classroom teaching, for revision and for supplementary content.
    • The exercises tool allows you to provide and organise a wide range of learning tasks, e.g. for developing or deepening your understanding of the learning material.
    • With settings such as wiki navigation, page write protection, change tracking, etc., the wiki in ILIAS can be used in a variety of ways.
    • Tools for glossaries, link collections and literature lists complement the provision of content.
    • Glossaries can be used to create comprehensive flashcard training materials for students to use in independent study.
    • ILIAS offers a flexible interface where the various tools can be assembled and combined as needed. Text blocks can be used to provide notes or explain tasks, for example.
  • Managing and reflecting on learning processes, providing feedback
    • eAssessment in the form of self-tests throughout the semester or as coursework can be easily implemented with ILIAS and effectively support independent study. The ILIAS test tool has a large number of automatically evaluable question types and a wide range of setting options (for eligibility to apply, evaluation and provision of solutions, differentiated feedback, etc.). Question pools can be used.
    • In learning objective-oriented courses, learning objectives can be directly linked to materials, tests and tasks.
    • So-called taxonomies allow the classification of various content (from test questions, tutorials, files and much more), e.g. taxonomies for the level of learning objectives, but also degrees of difficulty and other categories can be made transparent in this way. The taxonomies can be defined by the user.
    • Reflection on the learning process can be guided and encouraged through ePortfolio and blog work, e.g. as a learning diary.
    • With 360° feedback, peer reviews can be carried out and competence profiles created.
    • Various tools offer learning progress tracking and statistics to make it easier to track students' learning progress.
  • Recording learning outcomes
    • With its test tool, ILIAS offers a proven way to conduct e-exams or implement coursework with many automatically evaluable question types.
    • ePortfolios in ILIAS can be used to assess competence-oriented exam performance.
  • Organising and designing collaboration
    • Participants can be easily managed via courses and groups. The group tool can be used to make the entire range of functions available separately for each group.
    • The forum is suitable for all discursive tasks, but also for collecting and organising information.
    • The ILIAS wiki can be used for collaborative writing, collecting content, documenting or for organisational purposes.
    • In addition, a booking tool and tools for surveys and polls are available.
    • Detailed rights settings allow access rights to be regulated in a differentiated manner in many tools.

Testing: Interactive content with H5P

H5P is free software for creating interactive (learning) content for the web, which can be integrated into learning modules or as page elements via a plugin in ILIAS. It offers numerous possibilities for designing learning scenarios within ILIAS. The H5P software and its content are not part of ILIAS, but are operated on LUH servers. Quizzes and other activities that learners complete with H5P are not integrated into the learning progress of ILIAS.

Testing status – Only limited advice available

The ZQS/elsa cannot offer training courses during the testing of H5P and can only provide limited advice on its use and functions. Furthermore, technical errors (bugs) cannot be fixed by the ZQS/elsa itself; this must be done by the development company Joubel. The ZQS/elsa therefore has no influence on the timeframe for error correction and cannot guarantee that the software will always function properly.
