The term blended learning can be used to describe a variety of teaching scenarios that all have in common that they consist of a combination of virtual and non-virtual components.
Blended learning combines:
- Self-directed learning activities (learning modules, forum discussions, video annotation...)
- Live e-Learning elements (video conferences, chats...)
- Traditional face-to-face teaching (lectures, seminars, laboratory work...)
The various phases can be weighted and arranged in very different ways. The didactic design is very important for the success of the method – the rhythm and sequence of the activities, the way they are linked with one another, and the social integration of the students.
More flexible in terms of time and location
The advantages of blended learning scenarios can be found in a wide variety of areas, only a few of which are mentioned here.
Virtually all digital teaching media offered at LUH can be used to implement blended learning programmes. Blended concepts also include the inverted classroom and just-in-time teaching methods.
We would be happy to advise you on your ideas.
Advantages of blended learning include
- Students often benefit from greater flexibility in terms of time and location.
- Online components allow for different learning speeds, various multimedia formats, or differentiated content offerings for multiple degree programmes within a single course.
- Concepts can be used with other forms of interaction that promote a deeper engagement with the content through a greater focus on text or guide students' peer assessment, analysis and feedback skills.
- By outsourcing the acquisition of material to an online phase, there is more room for questions and discussion in face-to-face sessions.

Modularised blended learning in GIS education
Dr Bastian Steinhoff-Knopp and M.Sc. Simone Ott from the Institute of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology report on the advantages of modularised blended learning in GIS education: offering course content online enables students to learn more independently. Content provided in the LMS can also be used after the course has ended.
