Course evaluations are enshrined in Lower Saxony's Higher Education Act, which stipulates that students should regularly evaluate the quality of courses. At Leibniz University Hannover (LUH), they are part of the LQL programme – the quality management system for teaching and learning.

Course evaluations are intended to promote dialogue between teachers and students about teaching and learning, reflect the students' perspective on their courses to teachers, and identify areas for improvement. The aim is to secure and further develop teaching and learning processes, the study programme and study conditions.

Decentralised responsibilities

The organisation and implementation of course evaluations is the responsibility of the faculties; the organisational implementation is the responsibility of the dean of studies offices.

If you, as a teacher, have any questions about course evaluation, please contact your relevant dean of studies office.

Regulations

Regulations governing the LQL Programme – Section B1 on course evaluation (in German)
Procedural rules for course evaluation (internal, in German)

Procedure

The standard procedure for course evaluation is a summative questionnaire-based survey of students using a university-wide core questionnaire, which can be supplemented with faculty- and/or lecturer-specific questions. The survey is conducted online in person using the centrally provided survey system (currently evasys).

Alternatively, formative or summative questionnaire-based procedures with Stud.IP or LimeSurvey – with questionnaires developed by lecturers or the faculty – or accompanied qualitative procedures via central providers of LUH are planned. The deans of studies decide on the use of alternative procedures on a semester basis.

Data protection

Personal data is collected for the purpose of conducting the course evaluation. For more information on data protection and data processing, please refer to the documents below.

Teaching Quality Index (LQI)

Following the course evaluation, the ZQS/Quality Development department calculates the Teaching Quality Index (LQI) for the individual courses and prepares a course-related report for the respective deans of studies, which clearly shows any areas where action may be required.
