Electronic examinations can be organised in two ways:

  • Examinations on stationary computers in PC rooms

  • Examinations on mobile devices such as laptops or tablets (hired devices) in rooms which are not equipped with PCs.
Testing in the ILIAS learning management system: Access and further information

Examinations on stationary computers in PC rooms

When testing on stationary computers, the 'Test' object in the ILIAS learning management system can be used and implemented on your own ILIAS installation using the SafeExamBrowser. However, other software can also be used in principle.

The ZQS/elsa already has experience in conducting and supervising examinations on stationary computers with ILIAS. Implementation is not currently supported centrally, but we will be happy to advise you.

  • The key advantages
    • Automated (almost immediate) marking for multiple-choice questions
    • Better legibility of text questions
    • Use of multimedia applications (video, audio, animations)
    • Use of countless question types offered by ILIAS
    • Question catalogues
    • Quality of questions can be verified through statistical analysis

Examinations on mobile devices

On mobile devices (such as laptops or tablets) the “Test” heading in ILIAS can be used too, but in principle it is possible to use other software. The devices need to be hired, or specialist firms have to be appointed for the realisation of the examination.

  • The key advantages
    • Rooms can be used that do not have any specialist equipment which means that there is no limit on the size of the group.
    • Further advantages are the same as those for stationary computers (see above).
    • If pen software is used for tablets, then digital drawings can also be created.

Further information

  • ILIAS is an open-source software and is available free of charge to teaching staff and students at the Leibniz University Hannover. All functions that are used for e-Examinations are also available in the productive system and can be tested there. Information on ILIAS access can be found here – or by contacting us.
  • For external service providers, e.g. when hiring laptops, the relevant fees apply.
  • The ZQS/elsa can offer advice on all aspects of electronic examinations. Expenses incurred for organisational and technical support must be taken into account.
