Tutor Training

Training helps new tutors settle into their role, which reduces your workload as a lecturers and improves the quality of tutorial work in your area. Even experienced tutors can improve their teaching skills by participating.

During the training, tutors receive many tips on how to prepare and conduct good courses and how to deal with groups. Participants in the training develop their own strategies that they can implement in their courses.

We offer a wide range of tutorial services. We can assist you with any questions you may have regarding supervision and communication with your tutors and work with you to identify possible training opportunities. We also offer additional in-depth meetings for reflection and consolidation of content. If your tutors have any questions during their work, you can contact us at any time for advice and support.

In an initial meeting, we will discuss your questions and requirements and determine how we can support you with our services. In close consultation with you, we will develop possible formats and content for the training courses. We are also available to advise you on all questions regarding the support and supervision of your tutors. The selection of training content depends on the type of training and tutorial, as well as the associated subject-specific requirements, which we will coordinate with you. The level of experience and knowledge of the participating tutors also plays an important role.

The situation is different for interdisciplinary basic training. Here, we focus in particular on generally important basics in order to prepare prospective tutors for their work in the best possible way. Topics include, for example:

• The role of tutors
• Clear and understandable communication with groups
• Planning and designing the tutorial
• Dealing with difficulties
• Moderation and presentation

Any type of tutorial is possible: group exercises, subject tutorials, orientation week tutorials, laboratories, learning tutorials or peer mentors who accompany students.

The group size for a collaboration should be at least six tutors to ensure that the effort and return are balanced.

In order to meet the minimum number of participants, it is also possible to combine requests from collaboration partners with similar subject areas. In doing so, we ensure that the type of tutorial and the subject-specific requirements of both cooperation partners are the same in order to continue to fulfil the advantages of subject-specific training.

There are no plans to award credits for participating in training. In some degree programmes, credits are awarded for working as a tutor, of which the training may be a part, or the training is recognised as working time. However, this is at the discretion of the respective faculty. If required, we can issue a certificate of attendance for training.
