Electronic examinations can be organised in two ways:

  • Examinations on stationary computers in PC rooms
  • Examinations on mobile devices such as laptops or tablets (hired devices) in rooms which are not equipped with PCs.
Electronic examinations in ILIAS: Access and further information

Examinations on stationary computers in PC rooms

If the ZQS/elsa is providing support, the heading "Test" in the learning management system, ILIAS, can be used. This involves the examination being realised on a separate ILIAS installation using the SafeExamBrowser. Examinations using ILIAS have been tested at the Leibniz University.

One limitation is that only twice as many students can be tested with one exam version as devices that are available. Larger groups are possible if A and B exams are used.

The key advantages:

  • Automated (almost immediate) marking for multiple-choice questions
  • Better legibility of text questions
  • Use of multimedia applications (video, audio, animations)
  • Use of countless question types offered by ILIAS
  • Question catalogues
  • Quality of questions can be verified through statistical analysis

Examinations on mobile devices

On mobile devices (such as laptops or tablets) the “Test” heading in ILIAS can be used too, but in principle it is possible to use other software. The devices need to be hired, or specialist firms have to be appointed for the realisation of the examination.

The key advantages:

  • Rooms can be used that do not have any specialist equipment which means that there is no limit on the size of the group.
  • Further advantages are the same as those for stationary computers (see above).
  • If pen software is used for tablets, then digital drawings can also be created.

Further information

  • ILIAS is an open-source software and is available free of charge to teaching staff and students at the Leibniz University Hannover. All functions that are used for e-Examinations are also available in the productive system and can be tested there. Information on ILIAS access can be found here – or by contacting us.
  • For external service providers, e.g. when hiring laptops, the relevant fees apply.
  • The ZQS/elsa can offer advice on all aspects of electronic examinations. Expenses incurred for organisational and technical support must be taken into account.
