10025: Teampower: Developing and empowering teams in a modern working environment

Course Content:
Working in teams has always been a vital skill across industries. In a modern working environment, we are often tasked with taking multiple roles and participating in various teams, often simultaneously. In fact, a recent publication reviewed 20 years of data and concluded that employees and managers spend up to 50% of their workday working collaboratively (Cross 2016). However, the same paper determined that 20% to 35% of value-added collaborations come from only 3% to 5% of employees. Therefore, to take advantage of collaborations, it is important to know what makes a good team and how to empower a team to reach its goal.

This course will look at the concept of teams, established theory in relation to team building, the roles of team members and soft skills required to efficiently manage and participate in effective teams. The course takes on an interactive format allowing students to test and improve their team working skills in the classroom through participative role play, case study and friendly competition.

Learning Goals:
This course aims to increase personal awareness and improve individual ability to build and work in effective teams.

At the end of the course, you should be able to

  • clearly differentiate between a team and a group,
  • understand the phases of team development and performance,
  • and gain an improved awareness of the fluctuating role of teams in the modern workplace.

You should also,

  • develop an awareness of personal strengths and weaknesses with the aim to improve upon strengths and minimize weaknesses,
  • establish tools for effective communication including giving and receiving feedback and resolving conflicts.

Study Performance:
Full attendance and active participation, independent involvement in exercises, reflecting on exercises and seminar content, presentation of work results, completion of possible tasks, independent preparation of content and materials (also between the course days).
